As I sit at my desk feeling blessed for all my good fortune, including good health and a thriving real estate business, I can’t help but worry about how many people were affected negatively by COVID-19. While we can see the light at the end of the tunnel as more people are vaccinated and business and life slowly start to return to normal, at least in the United States, I recognize that there are a lot of people who may not ever return to normal.
 
Whether faced with the death of someone dear or the loss of a job, house, or even more, the long-term impact of COVID-19 has still not been identified. Last year, I said I would rather deal with another Harvey all day long over another COVID-19 epidemic. In general, the people I come across are more stressed and anxious than ever before.
 
Harvey unified our community, but COVID-19 turned us into hermits, and as the virus became more political, we became more divided and angrier. This is not who we are, and we need to stop and rediscover out humanity.
 
In the middle of another busy day of selling homes (yes the real estate market is on fire as a result of COVID-19), a friend of mine put me in contact with a lady who started Houston Guardian Angel Moms that might be able to take some of my excess staging furniture off my hands. I am a true believer that we all should spend some time (and money) giving back to people that are less fortunate.
 
When I called Dee Skaggs, the founder of HGAM, I was humbled and inspired by her story, and I knew I had to once again spend more time giving back. In the last few years, I have either been too busy with work or my own life to focus much energy on charitable acts, but Dee reminded me that even a small effort can make a big difference in someone’s life.
 
Dee told me the story of her personal loss a few years back, and while this loss could have turned Dee bitter and unforgiving, she decided to focus her grief on helping others less fortunate. “I want to help moms and dads provide for their children when dressing them gets rough. I want to let families know- there is a light at the end of this tunnel and people care for you,” Dee says on her Facebook page.
 
To date, I have only been able to assist a few families with some furniture donations, but I am committed to helping as many families as I can this year, and I encourage every Realtor and family out there who is sitting in a home with an excess of furniture or clothing to all do a small part in making a difference in the lives of the families that HGAM helps.
